College: Cal point guard Randle has biopsy on kidney

BERKELEY, Calif. — California point guard Jerome Randle underwent a biopsy on his kidney yesterday and will likely miss at least a month.The school said a routine blood test found minor abnormalities, leading doctors to conduct more tests on the sophomore. Results of the biopsy weren't expected for several days.
"We're hopeful that the results of the procedure will help provide Jerome with a long-term solution and that he will be able to return following his recovering period," coach Ben Braun said.
The normal recovery period for a biopsy is 3-4 weeks.
Randle, who was expected to compete for a starting spot this season, played in all 33 games for the Golden Bears last season. He made one start and averaged 6.5 points and 2.8 assists while leading the team in free throw shooting (81.4 percent).
With Randle sidelined, Cal will have only one scholarship point guard available, sophomore Nikola Knezevic. The Bears are already without freshman forward Omondi Amoke, who is recovering from surgery for a vascular abnormality in his calf. Junior forward Theo Robertson is unlikely to play until the start of the Pac-10 season as he recuperates from hip surgery in April.
