The cost of aging is among the highest in the nation in Hawai'i when it comes to the cost of nursing homes and assisted-living services.

A new survey found it costs $271 a day on average for a private room in a nursing home here, while statewide the cost of assisted-living services average $3,753 a month. Both totals are in the top fifth of the 87 markets surveyed in the 2007 MetLife Market Survey of Nursing Home and Assisted Living Costs.

The overall study found nursing-home costs increased 3 percent on average from 2006, while assisted-living costs were almost unchanged. Honolulu's nursing-home costs were 27 percent higher than the national average of $213 a day. Assisted-living services were 26 percent higher than the national average of $2,969 a month.

The highest costs for nursing homes were found in Alaska, where the cost of a private room averages $510 a day. The highest assisted-living costs were in Washington, D.C., at $5,031 a month.
