NANAKULI — An early morning fire today that gutted a four-bedroom Nanakuli home was started by a stove being left on, according to Honolulu Fire Department investigators.

HFD spokesman Capt. Frank Johnson said damages to the home at 81-734 Kahau St. were estimated at $250,000 to structure and $50,000 to contents.

Four adults and two children at home when the 12:45 a.m. fire started escaped injury, Johnson said.

"One adult smelled the smoke, woke up and got everyone else up and out of the house," said Johnson. "They didn't have any fire detectors in the home ...They made it out by breaking one of the windows in the back and going out through it."

Neighbors said it was the second house fire on the street in less than a year.

The Hawai'i Chapter of the American Red Cross was assisting the residents with temporary shelter as well as clothing and food.
