NFL: Ex-QB Marinovich pleads guilty to drug charges

Associated Press

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Former NFL quarterback Todd Marinovich, who has struggled with the drug abuse that ended his career, was given probation and ordered into treatment after pleading guilty to the latest drug charges.

Marinovich was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and two misdemeanors of unauthorized possession of a hypodermic needle and resisting a police officer. He entered his pleas in Superior Court on Tuesday.

He was sentenced to five years probation and one year at a drug treatment center in Laguna Beach.

Marinovich, 38, spent two months in jail after Newport Beach police stopped him on Aug. 26 and found a gram of methamphetamine in his guitar case.

Police said he was skateboarding in a prohibited area near the Newport Pier boardwalk and ran away when officers tried to stop him. He was found hiding in a carport about six blocks away.

Marinovich also was sentenced to treatment in 2001 after pleading guilty to possessing heroin. Two years ago, Marinovich was ordered back to rehab for violating terms of his probation.

He also spent three months in jail in 1997 after pleading guilty to growing marijuana.

A star quarterback at Southern California in 1991, Marinovich was a first-round draft choice of the Raiders. He played two seasons for them before being released because of an acknowledged drug problem. He later played in Canada and for the Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League, leaving that team in 2001 after his heroin possession arrest.
