County officials say they will soon begin issuing citations and removing illegal signs in a new effort to enforce the county sign ordinance.

The county code has specific requirements for sign size and placement. Commonly seen illegal signs include sandwich boards and banners, aerial signs, signs placed on utility poles, and portable or flashing signs, said public works director Bruce C. McClure,

The fine for a first sign code violation is $300, and continued violations can result in fines of $1,000 or criminal prosecution.
