Advertiser Staff

Michael Wilson doubled, tripled and drove in three runs, and David Maroul hit a two-run homer as the Waikiki BeachBoys beat the Honolulu Sharks, 9-1, yesterday in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.

The BeachBoys (12-14) broke open a close game by scoring five runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to hand the Sharks (12-13-1) their third straight loss.

Austin Jackson and Brandon Snyder each had three hits, including two doubles, for Honolulu.

In the late game, Brad Corley hit a grand slam and Shinya Nakayama struck out 11 in six innings as the North Shore Honu (19-7) rolled to an 8-2 victory over West Oahu (8-17-1).

Nakayama (4-1) allowed just one hit — a solo homer to Ian Gac in the second inning.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

KWAN LOSES DECISION

Thailand's Malaipet defeated Kaleo Kwan of Waimanalo by unanimous decision in a televised mixed martial arts bout Friday night.

The lightweight (155 pounds) bout was part of the ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series that was televised nationally on the Showtime cable network.

Malaipet (3-1), who goes by one name, dominated the bout by relying on his kickboxing skills. He landed numerous kicks to Kwan's legs throughout all three rounds. The bout lasted three five-minute rounds.

Kwan, who dropped to 8-7, said: "I caught him with some good left hooks, but I didn't pressure him enough. I think I only tried to take him down once. But I am Hawaiian. You hit me, I hit back. I wanted to test myself. I lost, but I know I'm not that far behind the best."
