Cal Baptist wins at Waikoloa

Cal Baptist freshman Malin Thorberg closed with a 4-over-par 76 yesterday and still cruised to a 14-shot victory in the inaugural Dennis Rose Women's Intercollegiate at Waikoloa's Kings' Course.

Thorberg's dominance lifted Cal Baptist to a five-shot victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in the team competition. Cal Baptist had a three-day total of 975.

Thorberg opened with a 2-under-par 70. It turned out to be the only sub-par round of the tournament, which featured 11 Division II teams. Her 54-hole total of 224 beat out Hilo junior Jayna Shimomura (79—238).

Hilo's Nicole Aoki (87—244) and Ki'ilani Matsuyoshi (90—244) finished with a share of fourth. Kodie Nakamura (90—258) was 25th.

UH WOMEN IN SIXTH

The University of Hawai'i women's team shot 41-over 308-309—617 yesterday and was in sixth, 33 strokes behind leader UCLA, in the Kent Youel Invitational at the Kapolei Golf Course.

The top-ranked Bruins shot 293-291—584 to lead the 19-team tournament by 11 strokes over third-ranked USC (294-301—595). California (307-293—600) is third.

UCLA's Mari Jose Uribe shot 2-under 72-70—142 for a three-stroke lead over teammate Tiffany Joh (72-73).

Xyra Suyetsugu led the Rainbow Wahine with 74-77—151 for a tie for 16th in the 102-player field.
