Track and field: U.S. decathlete Pappas also withdraws

Advertiser Staff

OSAKA, Japan — Former world decathlon champion Tom Pappas withdrew from the competition after his first event today because of a foot injury.

He joined fellow American and defending champion Bryan Clay on the sidelines. Clay withdrew when he pulled a quadriceps muscle in the high jump, the fourth of the 10 events, on Friday.

Pappas won his fifth U.S. championship this year in a comeback from a series of injuries that had plagued him since he won the world title in 2003. He was in sixth place after the 110-meter hurdles, the sixth event of the decathlon and the first of the second day.
