HONOLULU – Gov. Linda Lingle has released $1.2 million for improvements to Kokua Kalihi Valley's P&P Supermarket building and Kalihi Valley Nature Park.

Some $800,000 will be used to renovate the P&P Supermarket building at 2239 North School St., which will serve as KKV's second health clinic.

"Renovations are needed to provide adequate facilities for the increasing numbers of low-income residents who rely on Kokua Kalihi Valley's medical, dental and behavioral health care services," Lingle said. "Likewise, installation of walking and hiking paths as well as bike trails at the Kalihi Valley Nature Park promotes a healthy lifestyle while helping to preserve our natural and cultural resources."

Kokua Kalihi Valley is a community-organized and -operated nonprofit corporation serving the residents of Kalihi Valley through a philosophy of "neighbors helping neighbors." It was formed in 1972 by community leaders in response to the absence of accessible and appropriate health services for the valley's growing Asian and Pacific Island immigrant populations.

Another $200,000 will be used for infrastructure improvements to Kalihi Valley Nature Park. These will include improving green space for public recreation, cultural preservation and the protection of existing cultural and archeological sites. Other improvements include walking and hiking paths, mountain biking trails, community gardening plots and outdoor recreational activities.

Design for these projects started in March 2007 and is expected to be completed in early 2008. Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2008 and be completed in January 2009.

An additional $200,000 will be used for Americans with Disabilities Act improvements to the Kalihi Valley Nature Park. These include the construction of ADA-compliant parking stalls and entryways to the restored caretaker's residence, which will be used as an active learning center by the KKV organization.

Construction for this project is scheduled to begin in June 2008 and be completed in December 2008.
