Island Air plane makes 2 emergency landings on Maui

The Maui News

KAHULUI – An Island Air Dash 8-100 made two emergency landings at Kahului Airport on Friday afternoon after the pilot reported engine trouble in both incidents, a state official said.

No injuries were reported in the landings that occurred at 1:30 p.m. and at 3:35 p.m., said Department of Transportation spokesman Scott Ishikawa.

The aircraft initially left the Kapalua-West Maui Airport early Friday afternoon en route to Honolulu when, five minutes into the flight, the pilot reported having trouble with one of the Dash 8-100's two engines, Ishikawa said.

Island Air Chief Executive Officer Rob Mauracher said the pilot reported low oil pressure and shut down one engine as a precautionary measure.

The pilot landed the plane at 1:30 p.m. in Kahului. There were 24 passengers and two crew members on the flight, Ishikawa said.

Island Air found the passengers new flights to Honolulu, Mauracher said.

Then, on the ground at Kahului, the crew examined the engine and could not find anything physically wrong with it.

Crew members took the empty plane into the air again to assess the engine, Mauracher said.

But, as the crew members proceeded to take the plane back to Honolulu, there was a "different failure" in the engine, Mauracher said.

Ishikawa said the plane landed safely again at the Kahului Airport at 3:35 p.m.

Mauracher said the engine "is very young" and the engines get serviced "all the time."

The engine will be removed and sent back to the manufacturer, he said.
