State's free-soft-drinks D2 campaign continues this weekend

HONOLULU — The state Department of Transportation continues its "D2" summer program this Labor Day holiday weekend in which nearly 75 nightclubs, bars and restaurants statewide provide complimentary soft drinks to customers who choose to be designated drivers.

The DOT's Designated Driver or "D2" Campaign is a promotional partnership between the state, local radio stations and nighttime establishments frequented by young adults in an effort to promote the "Don't Drink and Drive" message. This annual summer campaign runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend.

In 2006, there were 161 traffic fatalities in Hawaii; 76 of them were alcohol-related and 77 involved speeding.
