Chaminade volleyball defeats Sonoma State

Chaminade knocked off Sonoma State, 30-24, 22-30, 30-24, 30-25, last night at McCabe Gym in a women's volleyball match in the Hawai'i Invitational.

Chaminade (5-1) was led by junior Trina Kauliakamoa who had 20 kills and 17 digs. Freshman Samantha Miller added 13 kills and 14 digs. Setter Tanya Alvino added 50 assists and Evelyn Bluthenthal had 17 kills.

Sonoma State is 2-4.

Chaminade will face Central Washington University today at 2 p.m. at McCabe Gym, and Northwest Nazarene at 7:30 p.m., also at McCabe.

HPU LOSES TO UCSD

Rebecca Bailey had a match-high 15 kills as UC San Diego rolled to a 30-18, 30-22, 30-17 women's volleyball victory over Hawai'i Pacific University last night at St. Andrew's Priory in the Hawai'i Invitational.

Cari Kahn and Kelly Balanay each had six kills for HPU.

The Sea Warriors (2-4) will face Sonoma State today at 2 p.m. and Cal State Stanislaus at 7:30 p.m. Both matches are at St. Andrew's Priory.

UCSD (5-2) will face BYU-Hawai'i tonight at 7:30 at the Cannon Activities Center in Lai'e.

BYU-HAWAI'I BEATEN

Cammy Dranginis had 23 kills and Lindsay Forseth added 17 as Northwest Nazarene (Idaho) beat BYU-Hawai'i, 30-24, 28-30, 30-26, 28-30, 15-12, last night in the Hawai'i Invitational at the Cannon Activities Center in Lai'e.

Noelle Filimoeatu had 22 kills for BYUH and Faylynn Marrick and Agnes Tuilevuka each added 19.

BYUH will face Cal State Stanislaus today at 2 p.m. and UC San Diego at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be at the Cannon Activities Center.

UH-HILO FALLS IN ALASKA

Jessica King had 18 kills as the University of Alaska-Fairbanks beat the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-20, 21-30, 30-22, 30-24, last night in Fairbanks, Alaska, in the ASC Nanook Classic.

Hillary Hurley led the Vulcans (3-2) with 19 kills.

The Nanooks improved to 5-1.

UH-Hilo will face Humboldt State and West Florida today.

UH-HILO MEN WIN

Dustin Daley's second goal of the match, a header off an assist by Drew Geis and Gene Okamura in overtime, lifted the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, 2-1, over Embry-Riddle of Prescott, Ariz., yesterday in a men's soccer match in Kailua, Kona.

UH-Hilo is 2-3, while Embry-Riddle is 3-2.

In a women's match also at Kailua, Kona, Embry-Riddle beat UH-Hilo, 1-0, on a penalty kick by Cindy Jenkins at the 43:05 mark in the first half. UH-Hilo is 2-3, while Embry-Riddle is 4-3.

KUA, PARTNER SHOOT 67

TJ Kua, a Kamehameha Schools senior from Lihu'e, teamed with Honolulu's Dave Eichelberger to shoot a 67 yesterday in the first round of the Wal-Mart First Tee Open at Pebble Beach in California.

The gross best ball format is pairing juniors with Champions Tour players and continues today.
