UH's Brennan leads nation in passing yards in Week 1

Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan started where he left off last season leading the nation in passing yards in the first week of the college football season through yesterday's games, according to statistics compiled by the NCAA.

Brennan, a senior, completed 34 of 40 passes for 416 yards, playing only in the first half of the Warriors' 63-6 victory over Northern Colorado. Matt Ryan of Boston College was No. 2 in passing yards with 408 (32 of 52) against Wake Forest.

Brennan also leads the nation in total offense with 439 yards and is fourth in passing efficiency with a rating of 221.86. Brian Brohm of Louisville leads the nation in passing efficiency with a 289.05.

(Passing efficiency rating takes into account completions, yards per attempt, touchdowns and interceptions.)

The Warriors are No. 1 in passing offense with 540 yards, while Bowling Green is second with 412 yards. UH is No. 7 in total offense with 577 yards. Oklahoma is No. 1 with 668 yards.

Hawai'i's 63 points was the third-most scored this weekend behind Oklaloma (79) and Louiville (73).

UH's Ryan Grice-Mullins is tied for ninth in the nation with his 9 catches against Northern Colorado and ninth in receiving yards with 130. Tiquan Underwood of Rutgers had 10 catches for 248 yards to lead the nation.

Michael Washington of UH was No. 2 in punt returns with a 40.5-yard average. Marty Tadman of Boise State averaged 41.0 in his first game.

Hawai'i was No. 13 in total defense, allowing 182 yards against Northern Colorado. Fresno State was No. 1, allowing just 102 yards against Sacramento State.
