Baseball: Yankee 1B Phillips likely out for year

NEW YORK — New York Yankees first baseman Andy Phillips has a broken right wrist and will have surgery tomorrow, most likely sidelining him for the rest of the season.Phillips was hit by a pitch during New York's 8-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday. The club said he will be out four to six weeks.
"It feels like somebody hit me with a hammer," Phillips said.
Jason Giambi started at first in New York's 7-1 loss to Seattle today. Wilson Betemit, Shelley Duncan and Doug Mientkiewicz could also play first. Mientkiewicz missed much of the season with a broken right wrist.
"It's a tough break," manager Joe Torre said. "If we get into the postseason he may still be a contributor."
Devil Rays starter Jason Hammel hit Phillips with a pitch with one out in the fifth. Phillips shook his right arm as he staggered to first but stayed in the game and scored on Melky Cabrera's double.
"The timing of it was disappointing," Phillips said. "It's pretty simple math. You know where we are in these four to six weeks. I hope that I can come back and we're still playing."
Betemit replaced Phillips in the sixth inning of yesterday's game. Phillips is batting .292 with two homers and 25 RBIs this season.
