Annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim today

Advertiser Staff

Competitors in the 38th annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim will hit the waters off Waikiki at 9 a.m. today.

The 2.348-mile swim starts at Sans Souci Beach near the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel and ends at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Winds are picking up, according to the National Weather Service, reaching 13 to 19 miles per hour. Surf is expected to be in the 2- to 4-foot range off Waikiki.

Last year, 666 swimmers entered the event. (The race was cancelled in 2005 because of rough ocean conditions.)

Alex Kostich, 37 of Los Angeles, won the swim last year — his third win — completing the course in 45 minutes, 25 seconds.

John Flanagan, 32 of Hawai'i Kai, finished second last year, in 46:25, and Noa Sakamoto, 21 of Honolulu, was third at 48:38.

Claudia Barsi of Budapest, Hungary won the women's race in 52:40.
