NHL: San Jose Sharks sign veteran center Roenick

Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Center Jeremy Roenick signed a one-year contract with the San Jose Sharks today, postponing retirement for another shot at a Stanley Cup.

The nine-time All-Star's career seemed over after he scored only 28 points in 70 games with the Phoenix Coyotes last season. The 37-year-old center has 495 goals and 675 assists in an 18-year career also spent with Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

"I'm very thankful for this opportunity to play for the San Jose Sharks," Roenick said. "They have a great team, and I look forward to helping this group compete for the Stanley Cup."

Roenick mentioned retiring in July, but the veteran should provide leadership and depth for the Sharks behind centers Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau.

Roenick is the third-leading American-born goal-scorer in NHL history, trailing only Mike Modano (507) and Joey Mullen (502).

Roenick has 1,170 career points, tying him with Bobby Hull for the 44th-most in NHL history.
