Downtown road closures Sunday for city's 9/11 walk

Temporary lane closures will be in place in the downtown area Sunday evening for the second annual Mayor's Remembrance Walk, which observes the Sept. 11, 2001, anniversary.

Participants will gather at 6:30 p.m. at the Honolulu Police Department headquarters on 801 S. Beretania St. The marchers will proceed makai on Alapa'i Street, cross the South King Street and Kapi'olani Boulevard intersection, and continue on South Street to the Honolulu Fire Department headquarters on the corner of South and Queen streets. The procession moves makai on South Street to Halekauwila Street, and then toward the Prince Kuhio Federal Building at the corner of Halekauwila and Punchbowl streets. Marchers will then go mauka on Punchbowl to Honolulu Hale for the formal ceremony.

The following streets on the route will be affected, between 6 and 9 p.m.:

  • South Beretania Street, from Hale Makai Street to Alapa'i Street

  • Alapa'i Street, between South Beretania and South King streets

  • South King Street, from Punchbowl to South

  • Kapi'olani Boulevard, from Curtis to South in the 'ewa-bound direction

  • South Street, from South King Street to Halekauwila Street

  • Queen Street, from Punchbowl to South

  • Halekauwila, from Richards Street to South Street

  • Richards Street, from Queen Street to Halekauwila

  • Punchbowl Street, from South Beretania to Halekauwila

  • Ala Moana Boulevard left-turn lane onto Halekauwila Street

    Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and drive with caution. Closed streets will reopen after all marchers have passed each designated area.

    On-street parking will also be banned from 5 to 9 p.m. in the following locations:

  • South Beretania Street, between Hale Makai and Alapa'i

  • South Street, between Queen Street and Kapi'olani Boulevard

  • Punchbowl Street, between South Beretania and Halekauwila streets

  • South King Street, from Punchbowl to South streets

  • Richards Street, from the intersection with Queen Street, along the length of Halekauwila Street, to South Street.
