Baseball: Yankees' A-Rod to have MRI exam of ankle

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez was limping in the New York Yankees' clubhouse today, and the team sent him to get an MRI exam of his right ankle.

Despite leaving the ballpark a little more than three hours before the Yankees were to play Seattle, the slugger was listed in the starting lineup when it was posted. He was batting in his regular cleanup spot and playing third base.

Rodriguez was injured in the seventh inning of last night's 12-3 victory over the Mariners when he slid into Adrian Beltre and the third baseman toppled onto his right leg, rolling A-Rod's ankle. Rodriguez came out at the end of the inning, and postgame X-rays were negative.

While the ankle was more sore today, Rodriguez thought he would be available for the game.

"I don't understand. You've got to talk to Dr. (Stuart) Hershon," he said. "I thought I was ready to roll, but I've got to go downtown."

Rodriguez was in workout clothes when he got ready to leave Yankee Stadium about 3 1/2 hours before the scheduled first pitch.

"I was ready to play, but they're sending me to get an MRI," he said.

Rodriguez leads the major leagues with 46 homers and 131 RBIs. He is batting .310.
