Infant safe after Kapolei traffic wreck; 2 in custody

Advertiser Staff

An infant inside a pickup is safe after a crash that occurred about 12:20 p.m. in Kapolei. Two people also in the pickup are in police custody.

Initial information is that officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at an unidentified location when suspects fled in a Ford Ranger pickup.

The pickup flipped over near the intersection of Kapolei Parkway and Fort Barrett Road about 12:20 p.m., police said.

A man and woman got out of the vehicle carrying the infant and tried to run away but were apprehended, police said.

The boy, who appeared to be 18 months old and was dressed in an orange jersey and shorts, was taken to the Kapolei police substation, where he was examined by EMS and appeared to be unharmed. He was then taken to Hawaii Medical Center-West where he will be examined by a physician.

Child Welfare Services is expected to take custody of the child, who was smiling and waving at officers and EMS personnel on the scene.

Additional information about the incident, including details about the burglary and any charges pending against the suspects, was not immediately available.
