HMSA says prevention program helps with health, costs

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaii Medical Service Association said a new study shows there are health and cost benefits for people enrolling in its health promotion and prevention program, HealthPass.

The independent study found participants who enrolled in HealthPass lowered their healthcare costs and also improved their well-being. Healthy changes included:

  • Lower blood pressure and cholesterol

  • Weight loss and lower body mass index

  • A decline in cigarette smoking and in incidents of depression

The four-year study was conducted by HealthMedia, an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based firm.

The program features free health risk assessments and screenings as well as counseling with health professionals. HMSA said on average more than 20,000 members participate in HealthPass annually.
