"Revisiting Portraiture" opens at thirtyninehotel Friday

Advertiser Staff

Thirtyninehotel may be best known as a nightspot, but from the beginning it has held art exhibitions. The latest is "Revisiting Portraiture," the gallery's first annual juried exhibition.

Gaye Chan, artist and chair of the department of art and art history, served as premiere juror. Submissions of works on paper, which reconsidered or revisited the portrait as an established art genre, were encouraged.

In an age of gigabyte memory sticks, 10 megapixel digital cameras and free online storage at FaceBook we can print pictures of our kids on t-shirts and handbags at home. At the same time advertising has wholly appropriated portraiture's role in representing class, status, and psychology.

Artists in "Revisiting Portraiture" explore deeper realms of psychology, more subtle expressions of technique, and nuanced layers of representation. In the show are works by Mandell Andres, Dana Forsberg, Jaqueline Hegarty, Erika Johnson, Wendy Kawabata, April Lee, Mark Maresca, Lori Ohtani, and Jessica Oshita.

thirtyninehotel: 39 N. Hotel St., 599-2552

"Revisiting Portraiture" opening reception: 6-9 p.m. Friday. The show runs through Oct. 27.
