Hawaii-bound Walgreen plans for 550 new U.S. stores

Walgreen Co., the largest U.S. drug store chain, said it plans to open 550 stores over the next 12 months, as it begins operations in Hawai'i and boosts the number of locations it has to more than 6,400.

The Deerfield, Ill.-based retailer said there will be 475 net new stores after relocations and closings in the coming year. During its just ended fiscal year the company opened 615 new stores, including 115 through acquisitions.

Walgreen has said it wants to open as many as 40 stores in Hawai'i, the first four of which will be open on O'ahu by early next year.
