Baseball: Detroit's Sheffield returns to lineup

Associated Press

DETROIT — Detroit Tigers designated hitter Gary Sheffield was in the starting lineup today after missing two weeks with a shoulder injury.

Sheffield was activated from the disabled list before Detroit played Chicago. He last played Aug. 21.

"It's been frustrating — that's why I left for rehab," he said. "If I had been here, it would have affected me even more. It's exciting to be able to do something and help the team."

Sheffield has had surgery on the shoulder twice, most recently in 1995, but ruled out a third operation.

"I don't want to go through that — having to do six weeks of rehab and break up the scar tissue," he said. "I only have two years left, and I can make that."

Sheffield hit third for Detroit. He is hitting .279 with 24 homers.
