NFL: 49ers announce plan to honor Walsh Monday

Associated Press

The San Francisco 49ers have announced their plan to honor former coach Bill Walsh during Monday night's home opener against the Arizona Cardinals.

The 49ers will show a video and pictorial tribute during the halftime show, when Walsh will be added to the club's ring of honor.

Walsh will be an honorary team captain for the game, and the national anthem will be performed by the Glide Memorial Ensemble, the famed choir that sang at Walsh's memorial service last month.

Fans will receive a Walsh poster when they exit Candlestick Park, and the commemorative game-day program will be devoted to the former coach, who died of leukemia on July 30.

The 49ers also will wear their throwback uniforms with cherry-red jerseys in Walsh's honor, with the black "BW" patches that will be on their helmets all season.

What's more, Coit Tower is lit in 49ers red during the week leading up to the game.

"There is not a player at the 49ers or a player in the NFL today that was not touched by the contributions of the legendary Bill Walsh," 49ers owner John York said.

"He exemplified class, and we hope to honor him by striving to perpetuate his standard of excellence."
