The Montessori School of Maui is the recipient of a $50,000 gift from the Dowling Community Improvement Foundation.

The money will go toward construction of three upper elementary classrooms, a middle school building for 50 students and a multipurpose room that will house a communal kitchen, drama, art and music classes and an auditorium.

All the structures, funded by the grant, will be LEED (Leadership in Energy Efficient Design) certified and are a part of the school's sustainable campus expansion plan, officials said.

The foundation was established by the Dowling Co. Inc. of Maui, as a "green" building project.
