Track: Gay withdraws from 100 meters at Zurich meet

ZURICH, Switzerland — World champion Tyson Gay and silver medalist Derrick Atkins withdrew from the 100-meter race Friday at the Golden League meet in Zurich, both citing fatigue.

Gay planned to compete in the 400 relay.

"Gay is still feeling the strain from the world championships, where he ran no fewer than nine races in eight days," Weltklasse meet organizers said on their Web site. "Because he is still feeling tired as a result, he will relinquish his starting place in the 100 meters."

Organizers said Atkins was also tired from his effort at the world championships in Osaka, Japan.

Gay won three gold medals in Osaka: in the 100 and 200 and 400 relay.

Atkins, who is from the Bahamas, took the silver in the 100 in front of world record holder Asafa Powell, who also chose to skip the 100 in Zurich.
