Calucag gets 30 years in Philippines-related ID theft case

Henry Calucag Jr. was sentenced to 30 years in prison this afternoon and is under active investigation in a related murder case as well the disappearances of two Hawai'i men in the Philippines, a city prosecutor said.

Deputy Prosecutor Christopher Van Marter told Circuit Judge Michael Town that he could sentence Calucag — also known as Hank Jacinto — to as much as 65 years in prison.

But Town instead combined the most serious offenses in two separate criminal cases against Calucag and ordered the 58-year-old defendant to serve back-to-back prison terms of 20 and 10 years.

Calucag was convicted of stealing the identity, property and cash of a longtime friend, John Elwin of Kaua'i, who was murdered in the Philippines last year.

Van Marter said a task force of various law enforcement agencies has "made significant improvements" in the Elwin murder investigations since June.

Also under active investigation is the 2005 disappearance in the Philippines of another friend of Calucag's, Douglas Ho of Honolulu, Van Marter said.

In addition, authorities are looking into the disappearance of a third man, Arthur Young, in the Philippines in 1989.

Calucag has denied any involvement in those cases.
