CFB: Wyoming hopes to avoid letdown with Utah State

By Bob Moen

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — With Appalachian State's upset win over Michigan a week ago still reverberating through college football, Wyoming coach Joe Glenn isn't about to let his team take any opponent for granted.

"When they only get 12 regular season shots they have to make the most of it," Glenn said. "So for our kids to come into this game and not be mentally ready, mentally focused and ready to play 60 minutes, it just can't happen.

"There's no way they would let it happen, and there's no way I would let it happen. We love this game and appreciate what we're doing too much to not take advantage of our opportunity to go out and play this great game."

Wyoming (1-0) hosts Utah State (0-1) tomorrow at War Memorial Stadium.

The Cowboys are coming off a 23-3 victory last week over Virginia of the ACC, while Utah State fell to UNLV 23-16.

Glenn said he talked to his team about not having a letdown after a big win over a team from a major conference.

"And as soon I said it, I told the kids this isn't baseball where you play 160 games or basketball, where you play everybody twice," he said. "We get one shot, and you work and work. Nobody works as hard as kids who play this game of football any more, at least collegiately."

Tomorrow's meeting between the Cowboys and the Aggies will be their second contest in two years at Laramie. Last year, Wyoming won 38-7, and the Aggies finished the season 1-11 overall.

But Glenn said Utah State has improved markedly this year on both offense and defense.

"They just play good, good steady football," he said.

Last week, Utah State led UNLV 10-3 at the half and was tied 16-16 with 8:23 remaining in the game on a 1-yard touchdown run by Aggies quarterback Leon Jackson. UNLV scored the winning touchdown with just 1:02 left in the game.

"They're running the ball much better, run the power and play action pass, a lot of play action stuff to get Jackson on the perimeter," Glenn said. "... And they've gotten better on defense."

Wyoming is riding a four-game home win streak, dating back to last Oct. 14, when it beat Utah in Laramie. The last time the Cowboys lost at home was against Air Force on Sept. 23, 2006.

The Cowboys have won their last three consecutive meeting meetings against Utah State. In addition to last year's victory, Wyoming won at Logan, Utah, in 2003, 48-21, and at Logan in 2001, 43-42.
