Tennis: Aspelin, Knowle win U.S. Open men's doubles

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Simon Aspelin of Sweden and Julian Knowle of Austria won their first Grand Slam title today, beating Lukas Dlouhy and Pavel Vizner of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-4 in the U.S. Open men's doubles final.

This was only the third major doubles event for the Aspelin-Knowle pairing. This is their first year together.

Dlouhy and Vizner also lost in the French Open final.

"The last two days, Julian and I have been playing great," Aspelin said. "I felt a little nervous coming out here."

They won $400,000 for taking the title.

Knowle was competing in his second Grand Slam doubles final — he and Nenad Zimonjic lost in the 2004 Wimbledon title match.
