NFL: Giants activate 7-time Pro Bowl DE Strahan

Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants today activated defensive end Michael Strahan, reporting on their Web site that the seven-time Pro Bowler will likely play in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

The Giants waved cornerback Dovonte Edwards to make room for Strahan on their 53-man roster.

Strahan, 35, reported to the team on Monday and practiced this week after sitting out all of the team's training camp and preseason games while contemplating retirement.

Coach Tom Coughlin has declined to say whether Strahan will be in uniform for the nationally televised game against the Cowboys, expressing concern about Strahan's lack of contact this summer, the team said on its Web site.

Strahan, however, said he is ready to play, and now it appears he will be on the field when the Giants face their bitter division rivals, the team said.

Strahan is starting his 15th season with the Giants. He has recorded 132½ sacks, which ties him with Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor for the franchise record.
