Rugby: England tops U.S. in World Cup, 28-10

Associated Press

LENS, France — Olly Barkley scored 18 points to lead England to a 28-10 win over the United States in a Group A match in the Rugby World Cup today.

After scoring two first-half tries at Felix Bollaert stadium, a lackluster England could only add one more after the interval to tie the second half 7-7 with the Eagles in a disappointing performance for the world champions.

Barkley, who came to the team after Jonny Wilkinson injured his ankle earlier this week, scored a try and landed five kicks from six attempts for three penalties and two conversions.

Jason Robinson scored the first try for England in the 35th minute from a kick by Barkley after winger Josh Lewsey had made a piercing run down the opposite flank.

Barkley scored a try in the 40th after Lewsey and lock Ben Kay had handled to give England a 21-3 halftime lead.

Tom Rees scored in the 49th when he took a tap near the Americans' try line and barged his way through four defenders to touch down.

Substitute prop Matekitonga Moeakiola scored the U.S. team's only try in the 74th after England No. 8 Lawrence Dallaglio was sent to the sin bin.

United States outside center Paul Emerick was sent off with a penalty in the 80th minute for spear tackling Barkley.

England next plays South Africa on Friday in Paris, while the U.S. team meets Tonga in Montpellier on Tuesday.
