Beach volleyball: Youngs wins Gods and Goddesses title

Associated Press

LAS VEGAS — Kerri Walsh was unable to defend her title as Elaine Youngs posted a 23-21, 14-21, 15-11 victory in the championship match of the AVP Crocs Tour Gods and Goddesses of the Beach volleyball tournament on Friday.

Youngs, who played with Jenny Johnson Jordan, defeated Walsh, who was with April Ross, in the championship match. Youngs won $23,500 while Walsh earned $19,750 for the tournament. Both players selected their partners a few minutes before the final match. In the final game, Youngs and Jordan held on to the lead after breaking a 9-9 tie.

Youngs had kills on both the 14th and 15th points. Walsh, the top seed, advanced to the championship match because she was the lone player to go 3-0 in Pool Y during Friday's second-round matches. Walsh and Ross defeated Rachel Wacholder and Jennifer Boss, 21-12, 21-14, in Walsh's third match.

Her two previous matches had gone three games each. Walsh and Wacholder opened with a 21-16, 20-22, 15-8 victory over Ross and Boss. Walsh's second win was when she and Boss defeated Wacholder and Ross, 21-16, 20-22, 15-13.

Youngs, the second seed, advanced to the final with a 2-1 mark in Pool Z. Her second victory occurred in her third match, which against previously unbeaten Nicole Branagh. Youngs and partner Jordan defeated Branagh and Tyra Turner, 23-21, 20-22, 15-12.

In the first game, Youngs and Jordan reeled off seven straight points to erase a 16-12 deficit and take a 19-16 lead. In the second game, though, Branagh and Turner came back to win after trailing 20-17. The final game saw Youngs and Jordan take command from the start and go on to win.

That victory allowed Youngs to gain her championship berth over Branagh. Branagh, the No. 3 seed, went 2-1 in Pool Z.

Included in her earlier wins was a 21-16, 21-15 victory with Youngs over Turner and Jordan. Walsh and regular-season partner Misty May-Treanor have won 12 times this season on the AVP Crocs Tour and another five times on the international FIVB circuit, where they are trying to qualify for next summer's Olympic Games. May-Treanor and Walsh, who won the Olympic gold medal in Athens in 2004, are currently the top-ranked women's American team and third in the world.
