Warriors hold off Louisiana Tech, 45-44, in overtime

No. 20 Hawai'i stopped a two-point extra point pass attempt by Louisiana Tech to defeat the upset-minded Bulldogs, 45-44, in overtime today in the Western Athletic Conference football opener for both teams at Joe Aillet Stadium in Ruston, La.

Zac Champion completed a two-yard TD pass to Dustin Mitchell to close UH's lead to 45-44, but Champion's two-point pass to Brian Jackson was deflected by Hawai'i's Gerard Lewis.

"I liked their decision to go for two," Hawai'i coach June Jones said. "If it was good and they had won, it would've meant so much to that team and program."

Colt Brennan completed a six-yard pass to Jason Rivers for a touchdown and Dan Kelly kicked the extra point to give Hawai'i a 45-38 lead over Louisiana Tech to open overtime.

Brennan completed 43 of 61 passes for 548 yards and four touchdowns and one interception. Rivers had 14 catches for 175 yardsd and one touchdown. Ryan Grice-Mullins had nine catches for 166 yardsd and two touchdowns.

Kelly kicked a 49-yard field goal to tie it at 38 with 1:34 remaining in regulation.

After the Bulldogs gave up the ball on downs, the Warriors got the ball with 12 seconds left on their own 46 yard line but after two plays where Brennan was tackled trying to scramble, time ran out sending it into overtime tied at 38.

"We were glad to get out of here with a win," Jones said. "This has always been a tough place for us. Louisiana Tech did a great job all night playing with a tremendous amount of intensity and belief in themselves and it showed, the way this game went down to the final seconds."

Said Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley said: "I know everyone is going to say this is a moral victory but I'm not buying it. We didn't win. We had our chances.

"Our players and fans, they don't have a thing to be ashamed of or hang their heads about. It would have been great to win and we were close, but I think today we showed we can hold our own when we have this type of effort and performance."

Patrick Jackson ran for two touchdowns and Daniel Porter added another to give Louisiana Tech a 21-14 lead at halftime.

Brennan completed 15 of 20 passes for 181 yards and no touchdowns in the first half. He had six in the first half against Northern Colorado last week.

Louisiana Tech had 147 rushing yards in the first half.

Jackson scored on a two-yard run to give Louisiana Tech a 7-0 lead with 10:31 remaining in the first quarter.

UH went three-and-out in its first series.

Jackson scored his second touchdown — a 16-run to give Louisiana Tech a 14-0 lead with 4:03 remaining in the first quarter.

Hawai'i's Leon Wright-Jackson ran for a 47-yard touchdown to help close Louisiana Tech's lead to 14-7 lead with 1:43 remaining in the first quarter.

Brennan ran for a three-yard touchdown to tie it at 14 with 10:10 remaining in the second quarter.

In the ensuing possession, Louisiana Tech's Danny Horwedel missed on a 43-yard field goal attempt.

Champion completed his first 10 passes for 84 yards before an incompletion in the second quarter.

On UH's next possession, the ball slipped out of Brennan's hands and was recovered by LaTech, leading to the Bulldogs' third touchdown.

Porter ran 18 yards for touchdown to give Louisiana Tech a 21-14 lead with 5:14 remaining in the second quarter .

A field goal attempt by Kelly was blocked as time expired in the first half.

In UH's opening drive of the second half, Kelly missed on a 41-yard field goal attempt.

Brennan completed a 64-yard touchdown pass to Grice-Mullins for a 21-21 tie with 9:47 to go in the third quarter.

Horwedel kicked a 42-yard field goal to lift Louisiana Tech to a 24-21 lead with 6:03 to go in the third quarter.

Brennan completed his second touchdown pass to Grice-Mullins — an 18-yarder — to give Hawai'i its fisrt lead at 28-24 lead with 6:03 to go in the third quarter.

After Louisiana Tech was forced to punt on its next possession, UH gave the ball back on a fumble on a bad handoff between Brennan and Wright-Jackson.

Josh Wheeler caught a 3-yard touchdown pass from Champion to give Louisiana Tech a 31-28 lead with 47 seconds to go in the third quarter.

Brennan completed his third touchdown pass — a 19-yarder to Davone Bess — to give Hawai'i a 35-31 lead with 8:35 to go in the fourth quarter.

After LaTech punted on its next series, an interception of a Brennan pass by Marquis McBeath gave Louisiana Tech the ball at the UH 31 with 5:30 to go.

Dennis Morris ran for a 1-yard touchdown to give Louisiana Tech a 38-35 lead with 3:01 to go.

"Some mistakes at times hurt us and you can't do that against a team like Hawaii," Champion said. "Not with the kind of offense they have. They can score so quickly."
