Ramadan begins on Thursday

The first day of Ramadan, the celebration of Muhammad's transmission of the Quran that is marked by daytime fasts for those who are able to adhere to one of the five pillars of Islam faith, is slated to begin Thursday.

The monthlong event for Muslims ends in the Eid al-fitr, a festival that the Muslim Association of Hawaii celebrates either near the Manoa mosque or at Kapi'olani Park.

CHURCH OFFERS 'SPIRIT WALKS'

The Rev. Patri Hildreth of the Windward Religious Science Church, continues her weekly hourlong "Spirit Walks" at 7 a.m. Thursday.

The meditative walks and talks alternate between Kalama Beach Park, 248 N. Kalaheo in Kailua, and this week's locale, Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens in Kane'ohe.

MANIBUSAN AT MACKEY SERIES

Jesse Manibusan will be the headliner in the Mackey series when he comes to Chaminade University for two events:

  • "Multicultural Church," a workshop at the Mystical Rose Oratory, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 27; $15 ($20 at the door, free for students, faculty and staff), includes refreshments. Those who register by Oct. 22 will receive a box lunch.

  • Mackey lecture/concert, "Open My Eyes Lord," 4 p.m. Oct. 28, Mamiya Theatre, free.

    Manibusan is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and storyteller.

    ART CONTEST PART OF PEACE DAY

    The "Expressions of Peace" contest will be part of the Sept. 21 Peace Day.

    Hawai'i is the first state to annually celebrate its own Peace Day, related to the U.N. International Day of Peace, organized by the Spark M. Matsunaga Institute for Peace. Artwork will be displayed at the state Capitol and award winners will be announced at a special ceremony that day.

    WORLD PEACE WALK ON OCT. 2

    Mahatma Gandhi's birthday kicks off another peace event, which begins with a candlelight ceremony at 6 p.m. Oct. 2.

    The Royal Hawaiian Band will perform.

    Also part of the celebration is the World Peace Walk, at 8 a.m. Oct. 6 from Magic Island to Kalakaua Avenue, stopping at Gandhi's statue. An interfaith program will begin at 9:15 a.m. with a Hawaiian blessing. It includes water and snacks after; participants are encouraged to wear white clothes and comfortable shoes, and to bring an umbrella, glasses and caps/visors.

    INTERFAITH GROUP PRESENTS FORUM

    Honolulu Hongwanji Council and the Interfaith Alliance of Hawaii are offering a "Social Concern: Sustainability" forum at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Buddhist Study Center, 1436 University Ave.

    It's the third in a series of forums on social issues.
