'Bows, Pacific play to 2-2 tie

As expected with two teams filled with players from Hawai'i, the Rainbow Wahine and Pacific women's soccer teams played a spirited game that resulted in a 2-2 tie.

Hawai'i and Pacific played through 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods in a game that featured both teams scoring goals 10 seconds apart in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic last night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium in front of 1,620.

"The quality of the game was much better," Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. "It was an energized game and we want to play like that."

Hawai'i (2-0-1) plays Tennessee-Martin (1-0) tomorrow at 5 p.m. UTM and Pacific (2-0-1) play tonight at 7. It was the third time in the past four years Hawai'i and Pacific played double overtime ties.

"As much as we're friends off the field, on the field it's business," Hawai'i co-captain Jessica Domingo said. "It sucks we had to play to a tie when we played the best soccer we've played all season."

The Tigers struck first on a play started by freshman forward Sammi Teramae, an 'Iolani alum. Teramae passed the ball to forward Mandi Van Dorn, who in turn crossed it from the left side to Bunny Dickson who volleyed the ball into the goal in the 20th minute.

Hawai'i junior forward Taryn Fukuroku tied the game in the 53rd minute on a free kick by Domingo that reached Fukuroku, whose running-diving-shooting goal flew into the right corner.

"The past two games we've gotten away with (winning) because of our athleticism," Domingo said. "We weren't playing attractive soccer. Tonight we played attractive soccer and I think it was much more exciting for the fans."

Pacific re-took the lead on a Van Dorn goal in the 77th minute on a one-on-one on a counterattack off a Hawai'i free kick. Pacific cleared the ball from its own 18-yard box, and Dickson sent it to Van Dorn just beyond the halfline, where it was a footrace between her and two Rainbows. Van Dorn shot over goalkeeper Kori Lu's head.

Ten seconds later, sophomore forward Ambree Ako scored her fourth goal of the season after midfielder/forward Kelli-Anne Chang headed the ball into the 18-yard box for Ako to run on to.

"After they scored they are usually on a high, so scoring so fast killed their momentum and gave it back to us," Ako said.

Hawai'i had perhaps its most productive first half offensively, but couldn't score.

"The magic between Taryn and I is back," Ako said. "And I was happy."

A header by Hawai'i freshman defender Chelsea Deptula off an Ako corner kick hit the crossbar 10 minutes into the game. At the 18th minute it was Ako's turn, when junior defender Tehane Higa carried the ball on a 40-yard run and fed Ako, but Pacific goalkeeper Jaime Souza thwarted the play. Ako had another chance when she blocked a clear and the ball popped up into the air with 14 minutes left in the half. Her ensuing shot went wide right.

An Ako-Fukuroku combo resulted in Ako's shot hitting the crossbar in 37th minute. Fukuroku set up another teammate, when Domingo's shot was saved by Souza with three minutes left in the half.

Pacific threatened in the 65th minute on a one-on-one with Pacific forward Lydia Jackson and Lu, but Hawai'i swarmed Jackson and Lu scooped up the ball.
