NFL: Russell's agents, Raiders meet, but no deal

By Steve Corkran
Contra Costa Times

Meetings between Raiders officials and the agents for No. 1 draft pick JaMarcus Russell that commenced Friday carried over into yesterday, though the two sides failed to hammer out a contract by night's end.

At issue is the nature by which Russell would receive as much as $31 million in guaranteed money on a six-year contract that potentially could net the rookie quarterback approximately $60 million.

The two sides met yesterday morning, took a break in the early afternoon and then resumed negotiations mid-afternoon at an undisclosed location. The talks ceased around 10 p.m., with both sides open to resuming talks on today, though there aren't firm plans to do so because the Raiders kick off the season with a game against the Detroit Lions.

Russell's primary agent, Eric Metz, did not return a phone call. Raiders officials could not be reached for comment.

One person familiar with the negotiations said there is hope for a deal getting done in the coming days based on the progress made the past two days. That person cautioned that the nature of such a complex deal makes it susceptible to falling apart at any time.

The meetings of the past two days represented the first face-to-face talks in the Bay Area since training camp started without Russell on July 26.
