Maui County unveils hazardous-materials fire truck

Advertiser Staff

Maui County's first hazardous-materials fire truck was blessed Friday and named "Hali'iola," which in Hawaiian means "to provide a barrier of protection of life."

Purchased with money from FEMA/Department of Homeland Security, the 41-foot-long truck features a compressed air-foam water system which gives 300 gallons of water the fire-fighting capacity of 1,000 gallons, county officials said in a news release.

The truck has a lab that can be used to detect and identify radiological and chemical hazards.
