Sand dune project to close portion of Maui beach park

Advertiser Staff

The Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation announced today that a section of the north end of Kamaole Beach Park III will be closed off for a sand dune restoration project beginning Friday.

The project is a joint effort between the County Department of Public Works, volunteers and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, which is providing sand being dredged from the Kihei Small Boat Harbor.

The coastal sand dune system in the north section of the park, eroded over time by wind and tides, will be replenished and replanted with existing grass and native naupaka.

The use of heavy construction equipment will require the temporary closure of the grassy area just north of the main parking lot for about three months.

After the initial sand-delivery phase, closure will be limited to a smaller area to protect new plantings.

For more information or to volunteer, call Mary Kielty at 808-891-2456.
