2 Hawaii metal recyclers arrested in police sting

By Peter Boylan
Advertiser Staff Writer

Two metal recyclers were arrested this morning after they allegedly violated the state's new copper law that requires recyclers to ask for documentation proving the metal is not stolen prior to purchase.

Undercover police officers attempted to sell employees at Aiea Recycling and Okuda Recycling copper wire without notarized documentation stating where the wire came from and that it was not stolen.

A 60-year-old woman at Okuda recycling was arrested, as was an employee at Aiea Recycling.

Violating the new law, which went into effect July 1, is a misdemeanor.

The operation, dubbed "Full Copper Jacket 2" was conducted by Honolulu police officers assigned to the Kalihi patrol district. Honolulu police Maj. Kurt B. Kendro oversaw the operation.
