U.S., state flags at half-staff tomorrow for 'Patriot Day'

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle has proclaimed tomorrow as "Patriot Day" in Hawai'i and has ordered state flags at all state and county buildings to be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset in honor of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on our nation on Sept. 11, 2001.

The governor's order is in conjunction with President George W. Bush's order that all U.S. flags be flown at half-staff on this day in memory of the victims. By a joint resolution approved on Dec.18, 2001, the U.S. Congress designated Sept. 11 of each year as "Patriot Day."

"Six years after that tragic day, the shock and horror of the senseless attacks on our nation that claimed so many innocent lives is still vivid in our minds," Lingle said in a news release.

"On this sixth anniversary of 9-11, we remember the men and women from across the country, including those from Hawai'i, who perished and the families they left behind. We also pay tribute to the countless everyday heroes who came to the aid of those in need. This day of remembrance is also a time to thank the members of our armed forces and first responders — all true patriots — who bravely and selflessly risk their lives to defend democracy and to keep our nation and our communities safe."
