Gagalac died in Hawijah, Iraq, from injuries he suffered when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his Humvee during combat operations.

Gagalac was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, at Schofield Barracks.

He joined the Army in January 2000 and was assigned to Schofield in 2003, according to the Department of Defense.
