UH's Higa earns WAC honor

University of Hawai'i junior defender Tehane Higa was named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced today.

It is the second straight week a Rainbow Wahine earned a weekly honor.

Higa was the MVP of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic this past weekend.

She led the Rainbow Wahine to the title with a 2-2 double overtime tie with Pacific Friday and a 3-0 win over Tennessee-Martin Sunday, in which she scored a second-half goal on a penalty kick.

Freshman utility player Mari Punzal was the WAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3.

HAWAI'I PACIFIC SWEEPS PAST HOLY NAMES

Leslie Schipper had 10 kills, 12 digs and two aces to lead Hawai'i Pacific University to a 30-17, 30-24, 30-23 victory over Holy Names University last night in a women's volleyball match at St. Andrew's Priory Gym.

Eva Johnson and Antje Buskies each added eight kills for the Sea Warriors, and Charly Sampaga had 19 digs.

Miya Frank, a 2005 Roosevelt High graduate, had six kills for Holy Names. Kayla Coleman led the Oakland, Calif., school with 12 kills.

The Hawks hit .000 in the match, which ended their two-match winning streak.

HPU improved to 4-5; Holy Names dropped to 3-8.
