Stocks end flat as oil prices top $80 a barrel

Stocks ended flat Wednesday as investors appeared confident the Federal Reserve would lower rates when it meets next week but were nonetheless cautious as oil prices moved above $80 a barrel for the first time and the already weak dollar lost more ground.

  • The Dow Jones industrial average fell 16.74, or 0.13 percent, to 13,291.65.

  • The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 0.07, or 0.00 percent, to 1,471.56.

  • The Nasdaq composite index fell 5.40, or 0.21 percent, to 2,592.07.

    For the week:

  • The Dow is up 178.27, or 1.36 percent.

  • The S&P is up 18.01, or 1.24 percent.

  • The Nasdaq is up 26.37, or 1.03 percent.

    For the year:

  • The Dow is up 828.50, or 6.65 percent.

  • The S&P is up 53.26, or 3.76 percent.

  • The Nasdaq is up 176.78, or 7.32 percent.
