Kaua'i's Andy Irons defeated Sunny Garcia of the North Shore today in a battle of former world champions in the second round of the Boost Mobile Pro presented by Hurley at Lower Trestles, Calif.

Irons, the three-time former ASP world champ, scored 14.66 points to Garcia's 10.77 in the Fosters ASP World Tour event featuring the top 45 surfers in the world and three wildcards.

Garcia was a wildcard in the meet.

"Me and Sunny talked a lot out there, it's really good to see him, I haven't seen him in ages," Andy Irons said in a story at the meet's Web site. "We've surfed together a lot in the past ten years and hopefully he gets that wildcard to get back on tour. We started catching up a little too much, I started thinking, wait I've got to surf a heat here. I have to get back in the game right now."

Hawai'i's Pancho Sullivan also advanced with a second-round victory over Mark Occhilupo of Australia, 13.17-12.44.

Two wildcards pulled off upsets today: Dane Reynolds of California upset current world No. 2 Taj Burrow of Australia and Jordy Smith of South Africa, eliminated world No. 5 Joel Parkinson of Australia.

Smith meets Irons in Round 3 tomorrow, surf permitting.
