Youth theater plans 'Spooky Kabuki' masquerade event

Taking a cue from Honolulu Theatre for Youth's new play, "Obake," the Japanese word for ghosts, the theater has picked "Spooky Kabuki" as the theme of its Le Masquerade 2007, set from 6:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Manoa Grand Ballroom at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, 2454 S. Beretania St. in Mo'ili'ili.Events include dinner, a silent auction and a preview of "Obake." Anne Namba has designed the special evening, with program direction by taiko experts Kenny and Chizuko Endo.
Thus, there will be a decidedly ethnic flavor, with taiko drumming, shakuhachi performances, obon dancing, with sushi and tempura stations and other fare including pig, chicken, sake, green tea martinis. With Halloween looming, there will be obake hair and makeup stations,too, and a yakuza tattoo station for more diversion.
Costumes are encouraged and there will be prizes for the best Ninja, Geisha, Shogun, Samurai, or Empire Costumes. Al Waterson will be master of ceremonies.
Sponsor Tables of 10 are available at $2,500 (Samurai), $3,500 (Shogun) and $5,000 (Emperor and Empress) levels. Individual seats are available at $175.
