HPD officers to start UH-Manoa 'dusk-to-dawn' patrols

Advertiser Staff

Starting this Sunday night, Honolulu Police Department officers will provide an added "dusk-to-dawn" security presence on the 300-acre University of Hawai'i at Manoa campus.

Under an agreement with HPD, UH-Manoa is hiring two off-duty officers to patrol the campus every night from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Their patrols will also include College Hill and the faculty housing complex in upper Manoa.

"These police officers will provide added security to UH-Manoa students and staff at night, plus rapid response in case of any on-campus emergencies," Kathy Cutshaw, vice chancellor for administration, said in a news release issued today.

Other recent security improvements at UH-Manoa at student residence halls include:

  • Movement towards 24-7 reception desk operations and ID checking in the freshmen Hale Aloha Complex;

  • Student residents were provided safety and security awareness briefings;

  • Residence Hall staff continue to emphasize safety and security protocol, including educating individual students when they leave doors unlocked;

  • Doors in the Hale Aloha Towers were tested and re-cored to make sure bathroom locks work with room keys and all student keys function properly.
