HECO volunteers ready again for cleanup at Kahe beach

Advertiser Staff

About 100 employees of Hawaiian Electric Company and their families will take part in the annual international coastal cleanup effort known as "Get the Drift and Bag It."

This year's effort is set for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Kahe's "Electric Beach," across the Kahe Power Plant.

In past years, Hawaiian Electric volunteers have cleaned the one-mile shoreline along Kahe Beach Point Park and collected enough trash to fill a 30-foot roll-off bin in just two hours.

"Last year, we picked up 200 spare tires and enough parts to build an entire car," Michael Carberry, chair of the event, said in a news release.

HECO has been taking part in "Get the Drift and Bag It" for two decades, according to the release.

Volunteers will be provided with bright yellow T-shirts, gloves and trash bags.
