Humane Society ranks Hawaii low in dogfighting laws

Associated Press

HONOLULU — The Humane Society of the United States ranks Hawai'i in the bottom five for dogfighting laws.

With pro football star Michael Vick facing jail time and indefinite suspension from the Atlanta Falcons for his involvement in dogfighting, the society has taken a look at laws prohibiting dogfighting across the country.

The society says Hawai'i stands with Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada and Georgia in the bottom five, allowing some aspects of dogfighting to go completely unpunished. It says what punishment there is in the states is little more than a slap on the wrist.

The report says that although participating in a dogfight and possessing dogs for fighting are both felonies in Hawai'i, there are no laws against being a spectator at a fight.
