About 10,000 union workers at 14 hotels and casinos in Las Vegas will vote today on whether to authorize their union to call for a strike.

The workers are members of the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, Bartenders Union Local 165 and their parent union, UNITE HERE. The employees include cocktail waitresses, cooks, bellmen, kitchen workers, housekeepers and other service workers.

In addition to the Las Vegas workers, another 1,000 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno will be participating in the strike vote. If a strike is authorized, it will not immediately be known if or when a walkout would occur.

A strike could affect Hawai'i residents who travel to Las Vegas by the thousands each month. Many of the properties are in the downtown Las Vegas area, a popular place to stay among local residents.

The Las Vegas hotels that would be affected are: Binion's, El Cortez, Four Queens, Fremont, Golden Gate, Golden Nugget, Jerry's Nugget, Las Vegas Club, Las Vegas Hilton, Main Street, Margaritaville, Plaza, Tropicana and Western.

The unions recently announced the creation of a strike fund in the event of a strike.

Earlier this week, tentative contract agreements were reached with 1,200 union workers at the Stratosphere and 700 employees at the Sahara. Ratification votes are scheduled for Saturday.
