Hawaii will honor nation's first Filipino mayor

Advertiser Staff

State and county buildings will fly their flags at half-staff on Saturday from sunrise to sunset to honor former Kauai Mayor Eduardo E. Malapit.

Malapit, the first mayor of Filipino ancestry in the United States, died Aug. 27.

He was mayor for four terms from 1974 to 1982. He also was a two-term member of the Kauai County Council and chairman of the appeals board for the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

Gov. Linda Lingle, who ordered the flags to fly half-staff, said in a release, "Mayor Malapit will be remembered for his contributions to the community and his commitment to improving the quality of life on Kauai. His dedication to public service and his active involvement in the local community, especially in youth sports and activities, serve as examples for all of us to follow."
